A Zen Teaching
* * *
A university professor had heard of a famous Zen master and felt very called to visit him. During their visit the master quietly poured a cup of tea to serve his visitor, while the professor talked on and on about his perceptions of Zen.
The master poured the professor's cup all the way to the rim, and then continued to pour. As the professor watched this overfilling, he could finally no longer keep quiet about it. "The cup is full and can hold no more!" the professor blurted out.
"You are like the cup," replied the master, "How can I teach you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
Enlightenment is a lot like this.
It's a process of empting the cup of your "self."
