Enlightening Resolutions--2008

2008 is the year of "new beginnings" and if you're like most everyone, you made New Year's resolutions on January 1, but by now have already broken them. Well, how about replacing them with these.

This came in an email, and the origins are obscure so I can't give credit to the author, but the sentiment makes for not only some beautiful New Year's resolutions, but a grand plan for a lifetime.

  • Read more and dust less.
  • Sit in the yard and admire the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden.
  • Spend more time with family and friends and less time working.
  • Life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure, so try to recognize those moments and cherish them as they happen.
  • Don't "save" your good stuff. Use the good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first amaryllis blossom. Wear your good blazer to the market. Wear your good perfume for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank, etc.
  • Tell family members and close friends how much you love them and what they mean to you.
  • Drop the words "someday" and "one of these days" from your vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, do it now. What regrets would you have if suddenly you were no longer here for all the tomorrows that we take so for granted today?
  • No longer put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to life.
  • Upon awakening every morning, I tell yourself that it is special and be grateful. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a miracle and a gift.
